Mishkenot Sha’ananim

Mishkenot Sha’ananim

Mishkenot Sha’ananim (’peaceful habitation’) is the first Jewish neighborhood established outside Jerusalem’s Old City walls in 1860. The project was envisioned by Sir Moses Monteifore and was financed by the estate of Judah Toure of New Orleans, LA.

The name derives from Isaiah 32:18: My people will abide in ’peaceful habitation,’ in secure dwellings and in quiet resting places.
