The Water System

The water shaft was constructed in the 9th century BCE, around the time of King Ahab. Before this time, the city inhabitants had to go outside the walls of the city to the Hazor Ravine in order to collect water from the springs, making the city’s water source and those who collected it vulnerable to enemy attack. Five flights of stairs led ancient water carriers down to a 25-meter long tunnel that reached the level of the aquifer.
