The Prickly Pears at Sephoris

Sephoris has a large plantation of prickly pears or "sabras." It is said that these cacti were brought from the southwestern United States and planted here, as well as in other parts of the country in the late 1700s. For modern Israelis the "sabras" represents the "sabra" - a person who is born in Israel - as Israelis are often depicted as being a little prickly on the outside, but sweet on the inside.
