The Church of the Visitation

In the Protoevangelium of St. James (a 2nd century aprocryphon) there is reference to the ’stone in which John was concealed.’ According to this tradition, when Herod went about killing the firstborn of the land, Elizabeth ran up into the barren hills looking for a place to hide her son. By Providence, lightning struck a rock and Elizabeth was able to safely hide John.

The church commemorates the visitation by Mary to Elizabeth in Luke 1:39.
