Nimrod Fortress

Nimrod Fortress

Nimrod Castle is a medieval castle that was built in 1229 CE by Al Aziz Uthman, the nephew of Saladin. Some say that it is local Druze who nicknamed the castle after the infamous Nimrod. According to Genesis 10:9, Nimrod was a "mighty hunter before the Lord." The Nimrod castle was built upon Mt. Hermon and has a commanding, archer’s view over the ’thumb of the Galilee’ and the all-important headwaters of the Jordan river. The castle itself has many arrowslits (balistraria) from which the fortress could be protected by archers.
