Are they Lions or Panthers

A closer look at Lion’s Gate will show that the ’lions’ are actually panthers. Panthers were the symbol of Baybars the Great (baybars means lord panther). Because Baybars preceded the rebuilding gate by a few centuries (he ruled Egypt from 1260-1277) it is possible that they were simply thought of as reusable stones that could serve as decorative purposes or a reminiscence of the greatness of Baybars.
